How I Discovered Music Therapy

Bring the healing power of music to those in need.

Growing up in a musical family, I learned to play a variety of instruments, including piano, oboe, voice, and pipa. In university, I majored in music education. Throughout my studies, I realized that music is not only an expression of technique and art. It also has a profound impact on the emotions and mental well-being of its participants.

One time, I attended a workshop at a general hospital where a music therapist delivered a lecture. She showed how music helps children with special needs to improve their social skills. I was deeply inspired and developed a strong interest in music therapy.

To further understand music therapy, I pursued interdisciplinary courses in psychology, physical education, and special education. The same year I graduated, I went to the United States to study music therapy with Dr. Suzanne Hanser, the president of the World Federation of Music Therapy.

Reflecting on my journey from music education to music therapy, I profoundly sense the infinite power of music. It not only provides pleasure, but also heals the soul. In the future, I hope to continue on this path and bring the power of music to those in need.

Three instruments, including a small guitar, a saxophone and a cello, are placed on a wooden background engraved with a world map, symbolizing the global application of music therapy.

My Therapeutic Philosophy

Evidence-Based, Multicultural, and Client-Centered Approach

My therapeutic philosophy is grounded in evidence-based practice and enriched by diverse experiences from the North and Americas, Europe and Asia. I graduated with a Master's degree in Music Therapy from SRH University Heidelberg, Germany, and have been practicing music therapy since then. Before that, I studied music therapy at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA, where I gained more than 1,400 hours of clinical experience in different settings and cultures.

My approach emphasizes the integration of multicultural aspects, with a particular focus on therapeutic perspectives from the different countries. Through these experiences, I have developed an eclectic music therapy approach that incorporates humanistic, behavioral, neuroscientific, and psychoanalytic theories. I value a client-centered perspective, where therapy plans are personalized to meet each individual's unique needs and background.

In my efforts to advocate for the profession, I serve as a member of the Legislative Advisory Committee of the Taiwan Music Therapy Association and co-founded the Music Therapists on Air Podcast. I also facilitate collaboration between music therapy and other related professionals, including neuroscientist, medical doctor, music therapy researcher and professor from music therapy department. These experiences have enriched both my professional knowledge and my understanding of the worldwide practice of music therapy.
